Perhaps the most significant piece of legislation enacted in the UK in recent times has been the UK Climate Change Act (2008), later amended in 2019. Under the act the Government signed up to a legally binding target to be net zero by 2050 based on 1990 levels, becoming the first G7 economy to do so.
