New RBS scheme aims to reward sustainable behaviours at work

A scheme from the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) encouraging its employees to adopt a sustainable and energy saving approach to work has been rolled-out following Earth Hour.

The bank launched the JUMP sustainability engagement programme across the UK and Ireland on 25th March after a successful pilot last year, during which colleagues logged over 2,500 activities to reduce RBS’ environmental impact through the JUMP app, according to the bank’s 2016 Annual Report.

Of the 70 teams of colleagues working in a range of workplace locations including branches, offices and cash centres, 80 per cent of in-scope colleagues signed up, leading to significant savings for the group.

RBS also recorded a 5 per cent average electricity reduction in pilot locations, while also saving over 500,000 disposable cups, with the bank is forecasting savings of £3m from energy alone as JUMP is scaled up to cover all its UK and Ireland workers.

Mike Lynch, Sustainable Workplace Culture Manager at RBS, is excited to see JUMP rolling out widely.

“Colleagues can earn points for their team for simple actions like switching off electrical equipment, reporting leaks, travelling sustainably and encouraging others to get involved,” he said.

“RBS is committed to reducing the environmental impact of serving customers and JUMP brings all our target areas together under one cohesive programme.”

RBS sourced JUMP through the Innovation Gateway platform. Henry Majed, Partnerships Director for the Innovation Gateway, is delighted at the prospect of the scheme being scaled up across the RBS estate.

“JUMP is another great example of how corporations can work in partnership to source innovative solutions that achieve their commercial and environmental targets,” he said.

Graham Simmonds, Managing Director of Green Rewards, the company behind JUMP, sees real potential in collective team actions.

“Our vision for JUMP was always to use the collective actions of people in the workplace to magnify the impact, be it energy saving or less waste sent to landfill, and we’re constantly developing our technology to make the experience as easy and motivating as possible,” he said.

JUMP is an award-winning programme operated by specialist provider Green Rewards, which motivates RBS colleagues to practise sustainable behaviours at work, including energy saving, recycling and sustainable travel, while incentivising them with rewards such as vouchers and prizes.

The RBS JUMP programme has already been shortlisted for two prestigious awards this year, including the Better Society Awards and the Employee Benefits Awards.
